Mid Oregon Credit Union was honored at the recent Northwest Credit Union Association (NWCUA) annual convention for their impactful outreach efforts with “Pay it Forward”.  Mid Oregon Credit Union received the First Place Dora Maxwell Award, a regional award that will move to the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) Awards competition, where it will be judged alongside credit unions from around the country.

The Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award is given to a credit union or chapter/multiple credit union group for its social responsibility projects within the community. Since Mid Oregon Credit Union’s community consists of Central Oregon, our efforts impact Deschutes, Crook and Jefferson Counties.  Mid Oregon took home this award for the category of $100 to $200 million in assets and was one of 5 winners in different asset categories.

Over the past two years KTVZ News Channel 21/KFXO FOX Central Oregon, CoEnergy Propane, and Mid Oregon Credit Union have collaborated to bring Pay it Forward to Central Oregon. Pay it Forward identifies people and projects in the community that deserve recognition for going good things. While Central Oregon is full of individuals who go above and beyond, Mid Oregon Credit Union and CoEnergy Propane gave away a total of $500 every month to one of these inspirational people/organizations. KTVZ News Channel 21/KFXO FOX Central Oregon and the NPG Group of Stations took the concept on-air and online telling the stories of the selfless acts of kindness performed by Central Oregonians every day.

A few past award winners include Clover Fire Department, Backpack in Bend, Ken Cardwell/Ken’s Bikes, Children’s Vision Foundation, and Dee Ann Lewis & FACT/Giggles Learning Center of La Pine.

Troy Stang, the President and CEO of the Northwest Credit Union Foundation, said this about the award and Mid Oregon:

“The Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award recognizes model efforts by a credit union to significantly improve the lives of people in the community regardless of whether they are a member.   Mid Oregon Credit Union always puts its members first, so it is no surprise that they are a perennial Dora Maxwell award winning credit union.  This year we recognized them for their partnership with CoEnergy in the Pay it Forward program.”

The namesake of the award, Dora Maxwell, was an early credit union pioneer. One of the original signers of CUNA’s constitution at Estes Park, Colorado, she worked as an organizer for the movement’s trade association (then called the Credit Union National Extension Bureau) and held numerous volunteer positions at the local and national level. In addition to organizing hundreds of credit unions, she developed volunteer organizer clubs and worked with organizations on behalf of the poor.
